About us

Who we are and what we do

We're a media production company based in South Cumbria, providing film, video and web services. We work with businesses, educational institutions, charities and individuals to produce projects of any scale. We also develop our own television documentaries and short films.

Who we are

Phil Powell - Director & Founder

Phil is widely recognised as one of a rare breed of "Creative Technologists" working on the bleeding edge of interactive media. His unique mix of talents as a producer, designer and programmer have allowed him to embark on some truly innovative projects.

Throughout the late 90's and early 00's his work with leading digital agency Good Technology helped shape the Web we know today. As Technical Team Lead, he undertook ambitious flagship projects for the likes of Audi, Levi's and Sony, regularly winning industry awards. His work for U2 received a BAFTA nomination and scooped a prestigious Cannes Lions award.

In 2004 he joined Yard Partners as Technical Director and in 2006 relocated to Cumbria. For the year leading up to the formation of We Make Media his freelance work attracted clients such as Adidas, Universal Pictures, Endemol and BBC.

Jo Hutton - Director & Founder

Jo has both directed and produced a number of independent short films over the past 6 years. She has specialised in producing commissioned documentaries for visual artists, including established Aboriginal artist Dr Pam Johnston and the esteemed Scotsman, Richard Demarco OBE.

In 2005, Jo founded the non-profit organisation Cumbria Filmmakers Network, which provides training courses, screening events and actively promotes the work of filmmakers in Cumbria.

Her most recent production is a high-calibre short film "Call Me", written by BAFTA-winning writer Adrian Mead ("Waking the Dead", "Where The Heart Is") and featuring Chris Wilcox ("Shameless", "Life On Mars"). The film was selected for the Short Film Corner at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.

Our strategic partners

One of the reasons we are able to be agile and adaptive is due to our small infrastructure. We don't employ full-time staff - instead we have a roster of strategic partners who we bring on board when they're required.

We're not just putting our projects into the hands of any-old freelancers though - far from it. These are trusted industry professionals who span a wide range of disciplines: from artists to animators, creative writers to camera operators, sound recordists to site designers - they are all people with skills we have respect for, and who we enjoy working with.

What does this mean for our clients? It means that when you recruit us to undertake a project, you can be sure that you will be working with a highly-skilled team, who won't cost the earth.

Our motivation

Before we formed We Make Media, we spent a long time considering what kind of business it should be, and what we wanted to achieve. We've worked for a lot of big names, and our industry experience gave us plenty of food for thought.

We wanted to do away with excessive paperwork and unnecessary meetings. We wanted to concentrate our efforts on putting our creativity to work, and to develop relationships with a diverse range of people and organisations. We wanted to work with people, not for them.

We'd also had enough of confusing jargon, sales patter and the hoodwinking which is endemic in the media industry. Our experience has taught us that transparency, honesty and pragmatism are much better traits, and our business ethics are carefully built around these values.

But none of this meant that we were going to be laid-back about things - far from it. We take great pride in the work we produce and with that pride comes a high standard of professionalism. If we take up a project, we'll do it properly, and provide an effective service which we believe goes far beyond anything offered by our contemporaries.

More than anything else, we wanted to build a first-class reputation. And that can only come from being recognised for producing exceptionally high-quality work.
